Management Masterclass


Many of us build deep skills in campaigning or communications - and our success finds us managing teams of communicators, or campaigners. Management is a skill set and managing in civil society organisations, and especially in advocacy settings, presents specific challenges and opportunities.

Management Masterclass is an in-demand two-day training program in best practice management and leadership in advocacy and non-profit contexts. The Masterclass offers a unique suite of skills modules for you to refresh, build and hone your skills to manage for excellence, recruit superstars, and create a culture of impact. This highly interactive training is led by CEO Kirsty Albion with guest expert speakers presenting case studies, workshops, and tools in management best practice.

Delivered entirely online, Management Masterclass is designed for those at all levels of management, whether you are stepping into a management role for the first time, or you hold an executive role in your organisation.

  • Recruiting superstars - Recruitment is one of our biggest risk areas to manage. When we are unsuccessful, the costs – in money, time and opportunity – are enormous. And recruiting agencies, and even our own HR staff, sometimes lack the expertise to successfully recruit campaigners, organisers, advocates, media officers, digital specialists and more. We’ll cover:

    • Designing the right role;

    • Writing job ads that ensure a diversity of quality applicants;

    • Reaching the right applicants – advertising, headhunting, networking;

    • Setting tasks;

    • Assessing applications;

    • Interview process and techniques; and

    • Salary benchmarking

  • Creating a culture of impact - To succeed your organisation needs a strong strategy and great management (including great structure and resourcing), but you will only get there if your organisation’s culture provides for a focus on excellence, innovation and outcomes. This critical module covers:

    • Defining your organisation’s culture;

    • Understanding the levers at your disposal for shifting culture;

    • Case studies of successful shifts in culture within teams and organisation;

    • Culture settings and practices that encourage innovation; and

    • Strategies for getting new projects and processes off the ground.

Kirsty Albion
CEO, Australian Progress

At the helm of Australian Progress since the pandemic began, Kirsty has led her team to train thousands of social changemakers, convene hundreds of nonprofits and deliver groundbreaking collaborations. Previously, Kirsty served for five years as National Director of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, running high-impact campaigns to protect the reef, grow renewable energy and keep fossil fuels in the ground. She grew the organisation three-fold to the largest team focused on climate campaigning in the country. Kirsty has trained more than 10,000 young people in campaigning, communication, organising, and supported the growth of the Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network. Kirsty is the recipient of numerous awards including Young Tasmanian of the Year 2010 and the Prime Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year.

COST

  • $310+GST: Small Nonprofit Concession – For nonprofits with an annual revenue of less than $500K.

  • $550+GST: Regular Nonprofit Concession – For nonprofits with an annual revenue between $500K and $3 million.

  • $660+GST: Large Nonprofit Concession – For nonprofits with an annual revenue of more than $3 million

  • $820+GST: For-Profit Organisation – For businesses, education and government bodies.

  • $310+GST | Individual — For individuals and grassroots organisers who are not affiliated by an organisation or movement.

Partial scholarships are available at $170+GST and full scholarships are available at no cost to First Nations people, people with disability, people of colour as well as refugees and people seeking asylum. To apply for a scholarship, please complete an application here.

ACCESSIBILITY

    • Zoom - During the online sessions, we will be meeting via Zoom. If you have access to a computer or laptop, we recommend you join the training by computer to make navigating the materials easier. See here for accessibility documentation for Zoom; including a list of keyboard shortcuts here

    • Video norms - During the online sessions, we will encourage everyone to have your cameras on if you feel comfortable, but we will not require you to do so.

    • Chat - On Zoom you will be able to use the chat function. Participants will be asked to introduce themselves in chat, and to enter responses in the chat.

    • Captions - We will have auto captions enabled in Zoom.

    • Google Docs and Digital Documents - We will be sharing training materials over Google Drive, Google Docs and Google Slides. All documents, forms, and surveys will be provided in accessible formats. During the pre-training we will use the screen share function to share slides, as well as navigating between Zoom and an interactive slide deck. 

    • Early access to slides - A view-only version of the slide deck can be supplied early if this supports your participation. Any copies of the slides provided will include alt-text / image descriptions.

    • Post-training resources - We do not supply recordings from our online training as standard, but can record sections of the workshop if needed to facilitate your engagement. You will receive a copy of the presenter slide deck, interactive slide deck, and other resources. Where video or audio content is included during the training or in any of the resources, we will provide audio descriptions, captions or transcripts as needed.

    • Setting norms - As a cohort, we will also set expectations at the start of the training to ensure everyone can comfortably participate in the workshop.

    • Breaks - Breaks will be organised regularly throughout the training including meal breaks.

    • Breakout rooms - This training regularly uses breakout rooms, with group sizes ranging from pairs, through to groups of 5-10 for discussions and workshop activities.

    • Guest speakers - Any guest speakers and trainers will be notified about any access needs ahead of time, and we will do our best to ensure that speakers are briefed to ensure their presentations are accessible.

    • Other additional support - In the registration form, we will ask you for your access needs. If you require something in place that is not already arranged, or if you need more information about any part of the workshop, we will work with you to provide this.
